A Riddle man was jailed on 23 charges following an assault and a police chase in Sutherlin on Tuesday night.
Captain Kurt Sorenson of the Sutherlin Police Department at about 10:45 p.m. officers responded to an apartment complex in the 300 block of Sunset, following reports that there was a large disturbance.
Sorenson said several people were attempting to get 26-year old Anton Hubschman to leave the complex. The man had been visiting friends when a physical fight broke out according to the report. Hubschman had allegedly been drinking alcohol and had reportedly struck a 19-year old man across the face with a full bottle of whiskey.
Sorenson said officers attempted to contact Hubschman in the parking lot but the man retreated inside his vehicle and locked the doors. Officers attempted to negotiate with the suspect, but he started the car and attempted to flee. Sorenson said while leaving the parking lot, the man’s vehicle reportedly hit a telephone pole, a fence, another vehicle, and almost hit a police officer. The passenger side window of the man’s vehicle was smashed and a taser was deployed but Hubschman was able to ultimately flee in his vehicle.
The sedan was found several blocks away at the corner of Hawthorne and Duke. It was disabled due to the damage it received during the incident. A K9 unit from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office responded and Hubschman was found nearby. Sorenson said the suspect continued to resist during the arrest process.
The man was jailed on charges that include first degree assault, attempted assault on a peace officer with a vehicle, unlawful use of a weapon, eluding, resisting arrest, reckless driving, hit and run, recklessly endangering and more. Bail was initially set at $621,250.
Sorenson said no one was seriously hurt in the incident. The victim of the assault sustained contusions. He was checked by medical personnel and cleared at the scene.
