A suspect with guns was detained after a lengthy standoff in Canyonville on Wednesday.
Sergeant Brad O”Dell of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said at about 9:45 a.m. dispatchers began receiving multiple reports of a man who was firing several rounds outside a residence in the 400 block of Southwest Fourth Place. O’Dell said a number of law enforcement officers from various agencies responded to the scene.
A citizen notification was made to area residents asking them to stay inside their homes and lock their doors. Interstate Five southbound was reduced to one lane during the incident as well.
O’Dell said the man shooting was identified as 23-year old Cedar Higgs. It was reported that the suspect was seen with at least two firearms; a handgun and a rifle. Members of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office Tactical Team and the Crisis Negotiations Team also responded and tried to negotiate with the man.
Higgs surrendered at about 3:45 pm. He was taken into custody and charged with unlawful use of a weapon, menacing, second degree disorderly conduct, and for reckless endangering. He was detained on $65,000 bail.
O’Dell said detectives believe Higgs fired over 20 rounds during the incident.
DCSO was assisted by the Oregon State Police, Myrtle Creek Police and the Douglas Interagency Narcotics Team.
Higgs was also involved in an incident Tuesday night involving DCSO. He received citations at that time but was then released.
