A Cottage Grove man was cited, after a high-speed police chase early Thursday.
A report from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said at about 12:45 a.m. a 26-year old man cut the corner at West B Avenue and North First Street in Drain, driving through the turn lane. As a deputy started to pursue him, the suspect allegedly pulled away, going over 125 miles per hour on Highway 38 heading towards Interstate Five.
The report said the suspect made a left turn onto Curtin Road at a high rate of speed and continued north at speeds of approximately 90 miles per hour. The man reportedly started turning his lights on and off while continuing north on Curtin Road. The suspect blew a stop sign and then eventually crashed near the end of the road, bouncing his car off of multiple large trees. The man exited the vehicle and walked back down the road to where the deputy detained him. Physical signs of impairment were observed by the deputy and the man admitted to smoking marijuana and drinking vodka within the prior three hours.
According to the report, the suspect said he had seen the deputy in Drain but didn’t know the deputy was chasing him until right before he crashed. The suspect said he was headed home and thought he had turned onto Territorial Highway.
The man was checked by medical and refused transport to the hospital after being told it was likely he had fractured his wrist during the crash. He provided a breath sample but declined to provide a urine sample.
26-year old Aaron McGovern was cited for eluding in a vehicle, reckless driving and for DUII for both alcohol and marijuana. He was released after being cited.
The report said the man’s pit bull was uninjured in the crash, but eluded deputies on foot.
