With state officials saying that public schools in Oregon may remain closed through the end of the current school year, Roseburg Public Schools is providing information to parents and families.
An email from Superintendent Jared Cordon sent on Tuesday said “the COVID-19 pandemic has confronted our community with rapidly changing and unprecedented challenges to overcome”. Cordon said it’s the district’s top priority to help students “stay the course in their learning and to provide steady footing for families throughout the process”.
Cordon said new guidance from the Oregon Department of Education calls for a more substantive, graded, potentially credit-bearing distance education for all students. The state has called on school districts to create a “Distance Learning for All” plan by April 13th.
The email said this week staff is focusing on connecting with parents and families, as well as ensuring that students have access to technology. During the week of April 6th, staff and teachers will begin implementing supplemental learning and education supports. Cordon said the district is examining the state’s new guidelines and making adjustments so that it is prepared to fulfill the state’s new requirements.
Cordon said the idea that schools may remain closed for the duration of the school year adds to the anxiety and concerns that students and families are feeling.
The email said the district is proud of the work the staff and teachers have been doing to support its students through “this worldwide crisis”. He said the district’s educators
“are dedicated, caring and inspiring members of this community and together we will find our way through this challenging time”.
Cordon said the district will provide more updates as they work on plans to implement “Distance Learning for All”.
