A Roseburg man died and a second man was hospitalized following a two-vehicle wreck on Friday night.
A report from Oregon State Police said at 6:00 p.m. troopers and emergency personnel responded to the reported 2 vehicle crash about 8 miles east of Roseburg on Highway 138E.
A preliminary investigation revealed that a BMW coupe operated by 62-year old Eddie Gaylor was eastbound when it went out of control for unknown reasons and rear ended a Ford pickup operated by 73-year old Allen Gilbert, also of Roseburg. The report said the BMW spun out of control and crossed both oncoming lanes before hitting the rock embankment on the westbound shoulder. The pickup rolled on impact and Gilbert was ejected from the vehicle. The pickup came to a stop in the westbound lanes of the highway.
Gilbert was pronounced deceased at the scene by first responders. The report said Gaylor was transported with critical injuries to Mercy Medical Center. He was later transferred to Sacred Heart Medical Center at Riverbend in Springfield. He was listed in critical condition at last check by a hospital spokesperson.
All lanes of the highway were closed for over three hours during the investigation.
Investigators believe neither driver was wearing safety belts at the time of the crash. A number of other agencies assisted OSP at the scene.
