The victims have been identified in a double murder that took place on Sunday in Winston, and the suspect is facing additional charges.
Sergeant Brad O’Dell of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said 24-year old Nicholas Lehman-Helmke of Winston and 31-year old Benny Stallings of Roseburg died at the scene after being shot outside a home at 280 Ford Street. O’Dell said residents in the area reported hearing gunshots just before 2:00 a.m. He said that following the shooting, 34-year Savino David DeSantiago reportedly drove past a residence on Peach Street, honked his horn, and began firing into the home through a window before fleeing.
The suspect called police a few minutes later and turned himself in a short distance away. DeSantiago has been charged with two counts of murder, for unlawful use of a weapon and for being a felon in possession of a firearm. He is being held without bail.
The Douglas County Major Crimes Team is leading the investigation. Anyone with information relevant to the case is asked to call the Investigations Division of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office at 440-4458.
