Officials with the Oregon Health Authority have identified a third presumptive case of coronavirus in Oregon.
An OHA release said the case is an adult Oregon resident from Umatilla County, who is now hospitalized in Walla Walla, Washington.
The release said state and local health officials are moving quickly to contact people who may have been in close contact with the individual who tested as a presumptive positive case. The new case has not been linked to travel to a part of the world with known cases of COVID-19. It is considered a case of community transmission.
Preliminary reports indicate the person attended a youth basketball game at Weston Middle School last Saturday. Under guidelines from the Federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, other spectators who may have been in a closed environment with the individual, would be considered “low risk” exposures.
Athena-Weston School District officials have closed the school’s gym and will conduct a deep cleaning out of an abundance of caution. The gym is physically detached from the rest of the school. Health officials do not consider the building to pose any risk of exposure.
The release said the test on the sample was performed by Washington’s public health laboratory. Oregon health officials have updated their case and testing reports at:https://www.oregon.gov/oha/PH/DISEASESCONDITIONS/DISEASESAZ/Pages/emerging-respiratory-infections.aspx.
People who may have attended Saturday’s basketball game, should contact health officials if they have questions.
OHA continues to recommend that all residents of Oregon take everyday precautions to prevent the spread of any respiratory illnesses including COVID-19 and influenza.
*Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue then throw the tissue into the trash.
*Wash hands often with soap and water for twenty seconds.
*Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
