Winter driving conditions may return to southwest Oregon this weekend as a relatively weak but very cold storm crosses the legion.
Gary Warner of the Oregon Department of Transportation said the National Weather Service is forecasting snow for higher elevations and mountain passes on Saturday night. Snow levels are expected to fall to valley floors on Sunday. The shifting weather pattern could also result in black ice on roadways through Monday morning.
Warner said ODOT wants travelers to check highway conditions at www.tripcheck.com before starting on a trip. Those who do drive should use caution and observe a few common sense rules for navigating hazardous weather conditions:
*Carry chains and know how to put them on.
*Drivers should plan their route and let someone know when they are expected. Stay on state highways and do not rely on GPS.
*Carry an emergency kit that includes water, food, and blankets. Have a full tank of gas and a charged phone.
*Get safety situated. Don’t wait until a storm hits to get on the road.
*Remember that drivers and bicyclists are harder to see in a storm and that vehicles do not stop quickly on snow and ice.
*Leave for a destination early and allow plenty of time to get there.
*Check on appointments before leaving as offices and businesses may close due to the weather.
Warner said ODOT deploys plows, sanders, and deicers during winter storms. Salt can be applied on the surface of Interstate Five if needed. Crews and equipment are positioned throughout the region to respond.
