TWO HIGH CASCADE HIGHWAYS REOPEN

January 17, 2020 2:55 p.m.
Two High Cascade Highways have reopened.
Gary Leaming of the Oregon Department of Transportation told News Radio 1240 KQEN that Oregon 138 East, also known as the North Umpqua Highway, and Oregon 62, the Crater Lake Highway, opened back up to traffic on Friday afternoon.
Sections of the two highways in southern Oregon had been closed for days due to heavy snow and falling trees. Motorists visiting the High Cascades this weekend should prepare for possible delays, short-term closures, and winter driving conditions.
Oregon 230, a key route, between the Rogue Valley and Bend, remains closed due to heavy snow and downed trees. Cleanup work will continue through the weekend. Workers must remove trees and debris from the snow berm before the blowers can widen the highway for travel.
ODOT District Manager Jerry Marmon said the department is glad to get the area back open. He said “we hate to close highways but sometimes winter forces our hand”. Marmon said that” crews worked tirelessly every day, only to be pushed back by more snow, hazardous winds and falling trees.”
