A 21-year old man has been jailed for first degree manslaughter and other charges in connection with the death a 1-year old child on Thursday.
Sergeant Brad O’Dell of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said at 11:00 a.m. emergency dispatchers received a report of a child who was not breathing at a residence on Cedarwood Lane in Idleyld Park.
O’Dell said telephone CPR was initiated until deputies arrived and attempted lifesaving efforts. The child, identified as Ember Alice McBride, was transported to Mercy Medical Center, where she was pronounced deceased upon arrival. Detectives and the Douglas County Medical Examiner began an investigation into the death.
On Friday, a forensic pathologist determined Ember’s death was the result of blunt force trauma and ruled it a homicide. The Douglas County Major Crimes Team was activated at that time.
Later that day, detectives arrested Aaron Toole in connection with the infant’s death. Toole was known to the child and her mother. He was taken to the Douglas County Jail and also charged with first degree counts of assault and criminal mistreatment. Bail is set at $1,050,000.
O’Dell said the Major Crimes Team is continuing its investigation and no further details will be released at this time. The group includes detectives from DCSO, Roseburg Police, and the Oregon State Police along with representatives of the Douglas County District Attorney’s Office.
