A Myrtle Creek man was jailed after swimming following a high-speed chase on Saturday.
A report from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said at around 12:00 p.m. a deputy observed a sedan driving north on Highway 99 South near the Swanson Group mill and recognized the driver as 27-year old Joshua Crossley. He allegedly had warrants out for his arrest.
The report said the deputy attempted to stop the vehicle but it quickly accelerated away. The vehicle turned into the lumber yard and eventually the pursuit went down to the river. Then the suspect ditched the car and fled on foot and jumped into the South Umpqua River. The report said after being told there was a K9 on the other side, Crossley swam back and was taken into custody.
He was charged with eluding police in a vehicle and on foot, for reckless driving, and reckless endangerment. He was initially detained on $143,750 bail.
