A Roseburg man was charged with assault on a public safety officer, after leaving a liquor store on Thursday afternoon.
A report from the Roseburg Police said just after 3:00 p.m. officers responded to the store on Northeast Stephens for a report that 27-year old Ryan Daniel had allegedly stolen a bottle of whiskey and drank half of it while still in the store. He walked away without paying for it and told a clerk to call police, according to the report.
Officers spotted Daniel walking southbound on Stephens near Bellview. Two RPD detectives were in the area at the time and attempted to contact the suspect. The report said the man started physically fighting with the detectives and then allegedly punched one of them on the side of the head with his fist. After a brief struggle, he was arrested without further incident.
Ryan was also detained for third degree theft and for a parole violation. He was held without bail in the Douglas County Jail.
