The Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Tribe of Indians has been awarded over $3.7 million in federal housing funds.
A release from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development said the grant was part of nearly $39 million in Indian Housing Block Grant funds which went to 12 Tribes, Native Alaska villages and Tribally designated housing entities in Oregon, Washington and Alaska, to preserve and expand their affordable housing inventories. More than half of the Federally recognized Tribes and Native Villages in the U.S. are in one of the three states.
The IHB competitive grants were part of a national announcement awarding over $197 million to 52 Tribes and TDHEs nationwide. The announcement was made by HUD Secretary Ben Carson.
In response, Travis Hill, Vice President of Business Operations for the Umpqua Indian Development Corporation said they were very pleased to be one of the 52 Tribes granted when the HUD funds were announced. He said the grant “will assist us greatly with our ongoing efforts to build houses for Cow Creek Tribal members and affiliated Tribes”.
