December 13, 2019 9:20 a.m. (updated 12/13 1:15 p.m.)
Principal Jill Weber of Roseburg High School said “there really wasn’t a threat” at the school on Thursday.
News Radio 1240 KQEN inquired after learning that a message was sent to parents of the school’s students on Thursday.
Weber’s message said: “We are aware that some rumors have circulated today regarding an alleged threat made by a student online”. She continued saying “We would like to assure all students and families that we have investigated these rumors and found that no credible threat exists”.
The message continued: “RHS received a SafeOregon report of a potential threat today and immediately began investigating. The report stemmed from a misinterpreted statement made online and was not deemed a threat to student safety. Students also reported the rumors to staff, and parents called the school to report as well”. The message also said: “We would like to commend the person who made the report to SafeOregon, as well as students and parents who quickly came forward to report their concerns. This is an example of how our community can work together to ensure potential threats are dealt with swiftly and safely”.
The message was sent to parents just after 2:30 p.m. shortly before the end of the regular school day. Weber told KQEN that the situation was “just a rumor that we wanted to clear up”.
On Friday afternoon Weber said that some parents and students have continued to report the rumors they are hearing related to the incident. She said out of an abundance of caution, RHS increased police and security presence on campus Friday. Weber said she hoped students would put aside the rumors and return to learning.
