On Sunday the HIV Alliance is hosting its southern Oregon World AIDS day at the Umpqua Unitarian Universalist Church in Roseburg, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
A release from the group said the ceremony is designed to remember those lost to HIV, celebrate successes in supporting HIV treatment and honor the work the organization has done in 2019. The theme is “Communities Make the Difference”.
In 2018 there were an estimated 230 new HIV infections in Oregon, and approximately 7,600 people living with HIV across the state. The release said while HIV and AIDS has become less prominent in news and community awareness since the early 1990s, Oregonians still face it as a real problem. It said people with HIV still face barriers in access to adequate healthcare and necessary lifesaving medications and have to fight a stigma surrounding HIV and AIDS which affects them both in their personal and professional lives.
