A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for central Douglas County and surrounding areas from 10:00 a.m. Tuesday through 10:00 a.m. Wednesday.
An Urgent Winter Weather Message from the National Weather Service said wind and snow is expected for the very busy travel period Tuesday into Wednesday morning.
Moderate to heavy snow is expected to fall Tuesday morning through Tuesday night, then to gradually decrease heading into Wednesday. While the largest travel impacts are expected into northern California, impacts will extend into southern Oregon as well, especially for mountain passes and other elevations above 2,500 feet. Light to moderate snow is possible below 2,500 feet. Strong winds will also result in white-out conditions.
Forecasters said heavy snow accumulations of 6 to 10 inches are expected above 2,500 feet with wind gusts as high as 60 miles per hour in the forecast. 2 to 4 inches of snow are expected down to 1,500 feet.
The Warning includes the mountains of Douglas, Josephine, Jackson and eastern Curry counties including passes on Interstate 5 between Roseburg and Grants Pass, and the Tiller Trail Highway.
Forecasters said travel will be very difficult to impossible in the impacted areas, affecting pre-Thanksgiving travel. Gusty winds will bring down tree branches. Motorists should carry tire chains, a flashlight, blankets, food, water, medications and a fully charged phone with them.
