A Riddle man was jailed after allegedly eluding police on Tuesday afternoon.
A report from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said at 4:00 p.m. 18-year old Rhett Johnson rounded the corner of Pruner Road traveling south as a deputy was going north. The report said the man was going about 60 miles per hour around a sharp corner. He veered out of his lane and partially into the deputy’s lane.
The report said the deputy turned around to purse the vehicle but it sped up. The suspect went up 5th, onto Main Street, and eventually onto Canyonville Road. The suspect was passing vehicles and at one point passed a vehicle on the shoulder. When the driver tried to make the corner onto Shoestring Road, the vehicle went head on into an embankment.
The vehicle was totaled but the driver was not injured. Johnson was charged with eluding police, reckless driving and reckless endangering. He was released from custody on Wednesday morning.
