The Umpqua Community College Foundation raised over $188,000 at last week’s Legacy Ball.
A release from Ellen Brown, Director of Operations for the UCC Foundation, said the theme for the 4th annual event, held at Seven Feathers Casino Resort, was “Embracing the Seasons of Education”. Brown said in addition to raising much needed funds for students, the evening officially kicked off fundraising efforts for a 10/1 Memorial.
Nearly 500 people enjoyed an evening of food, entertainment and dancing at the event. The fundraising total was $188,575. The majority of the proceeds will benefit college students through scholarships and program support.
Tiffany Coleman, Executive Director for the UCC Foundation said the event has become the foundation’s largest fundraiser. She said “over the past four years, nearly $700,000 has been raised to help UCC students achieve the academic goals that will ultimately transform their lives”.
The release said during this year’s special appeal, attendees were asked to support a project that has the potential to affect the entire community. As UCC begins its journey toward marking the 5th anniversary of the tragic events that took place on October 1st, 2015, the school is ready to begun construction on a 10/1 Memorial. That memorial will be located on the UCC campus. The release said a site chosen for the beauty of its view, has been identified overlooking the North Umpqua River. At the end of the night, $55,750 was raised in support of a $100,000 goal.
A rendering of the 10/1 Memorial was unveiled at the event. It features nine illuminated globes that will be constructed from the hearts that were cut from the metal state of Oregon displays following the events of 10/1. Two local companies have already contributed to the project through in-kind donations. The remainder of the funds needed to complete the memorial will be generated through fundraising.
