Violinist Alex DePue will be in concert Tuesday night at Centerstage Theatre at the Whipple Fine Arts Center at Umpqua Community College.
DePue is a world-renowned violinist and will perform with the Umpqua Chamber Orchestra and the Umpqua Singers, performing a wide variety of musical styles ranging from classical to rock.
DePue began studying classical violin at age 5. He won his first university-level competition at age 10. Later at age 14, he won a competition that entitled him to perform at Carnegie Hall as Concertmaster for the National Guild Youth Symphony Orchestra. He has continued to win competitions and appear as a guest soloist with orchestras and at festivals worldwide.
In spite of his classical training, DePue became interested in fiddling at age seven and began competing at fiddle contests. He was the Musical Director/Fiddler with country star Chris Cagle from 2000 to 2006 and later toured with rock artist Steve Vai.
