GREAT OREGON SHAKEOUT HAPPENING OCTOBER 17TH

October 4, 2019 3:30 a.m.
The Great Oregon ShakeOut is happening soon.
What organizers call “the world’s largest earthquake drill” takes place October 17th at 10:17 a.m. More than 600,000 Oregonians are already registered.
A release from the Oregon Office of Emergency Management said Oregon is earthquake country. In 1993, western Oregon experienced two damaging earthquakes: Scott Mills was magnitude 5.9 and Klamath Falls which was magnitude 5.9 and 6.0. Molalla High School and the State Capitol Building were severely damaged.
The release said in addition to those crustal fault earthquakes, there is evidence that a massive subduction zone earthquake will happen off the coast from northern California to British Columbia with force similar to that which hit Indonesia in 2004, and Japan in 2011, during subduction zone earthquakes and tsunamis.
The release said that Great ShakeOut earthquake drills are an opportunity to practice how to be safe during earthquakes by knowing how to “Drop, Cover, and Hold On”.
