DOUGLAS TIMBER OPERATORS ANNOUNCE SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS

The Douglas Timber Operators have announced the recipients of its 2019-20 college scholarships.
Applicants must live in Douglas, Coos or Lane counties with the intention to major in a natural-resources related field. Scholarships in the amount of $2,500 each were awarded to:
*Ashley Backen: Backen is a graduate from Umpqua Community College’s Forestry and Natural Resources Program. While enrolled at UCC she was an intern at Lone Rock Resources. She has transferred to Oregon State University where she will pursue her degree in Forest Management. She aspires to get her degree and move back to Douglas County and pursue employment.
*Nicholas Bryant: Bryant is a junior at Oregon State University, majoring in Forest Management. He has worked two summers at Douglas Forest Protective Association. He will be working part-time at the OSU Research Forest during fall term as an engineering intern. He hopes to get his degree and move back to Douglas County for employment, and eventually obtain his own piece of land to grow trees.
*Cole Smith: Smith graduated from Southwestern Oregon Community College with an Associate of Science degree with a forestry emphasis. He continues his education as a Junior at Oregon State University, pursuing his degree in Forestry Management. He spent this past summer as an intern at Roseburg Forest Products. Once he receives his degree, he will pursue a job as a forester in Oregon or elsewhere in the Pacific Northwest.
All three students will make a presentation at one of Douglas Timber Operators morning breakfast meetings to give an update on their college activities, field of study and career plans.
