Douglas County Sheriff’s Office K9 Grim had a busy Thursday night, assisting with the apprehension of two suspects.
Sergeant Brad O’Dell said shortly before 5:00 p.m. deputies received a tip that 23-year old Christopher Binder of Glide had been spotted in the 200 block of Brown Street in that community, and had multiple active warrants for his arrest. O’Dell said deputies and troopers from Oregon State Police arrived on the scene along with Grim. Grim tracked Binder from where he had last been seen and eventually located him along the riverbank. Binder surrendered and was taken into custody without further incident.
Binder was lodged on multiple felony and misdemeanor warrants. He was held on $150,000 bail.
O’Dell said at about 8:30 p.m. deputies were called to a residence in the 8000 block of Highway 42 in Tenmile for a report of a man who was violating a restraining order and was hiding. K9 Grim located the suspect under a bed. 42-year old Kenny Edwards came out but reportedly began resisting deputy’s efforts to arrest him. K9 Grim was deployed and assisted deputies in taking the suspect into custody, despite Edward’s efforts to harm the dog. Grim did not sustain any injuries.
Edwards was taken to jail and charged with interfering with police and with a law enforcement animal, for resisting arrest and for a restraining order violation. He is detained on $10,000 bail.
K9 Grim is a 7-year old German Shephard and has been with DCSO since 2013.
A second patrol dog, K9 Zoro was recently obtained to supplement the K9 program. K9 Zoro and his handler will begin training next month to become a certified patrol team. K9 Zoro is also a German Shepard and will be two years old in January.
