MOST SCHOOLS BEGIN SCHOOL YEAR

September 3, 2019 3:40 a.m.
Most schools in Douglas County are beginning their school year Tuesday.
4 districts and at least 1 private school started classes last week.
Information from the Oregon Department of Transportation said motorists should slow down to a maximum speed of 20 miles per hour when in a school zone. Speed limits can be in effect when lights are flashing or between 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. This also applies to school cross walks away from school grounds.
The ODOT release said drivers should watch for children that are walking, biking, scooting, or skateboarding to school in the morning and from school in the afternoon. Drivers should stop and stay stopped for people in crosswalks and watch for kids that may cross streets at other spots. Motorists should also be alert for school buses and prepare to stop when overhead lights flash. Drivers should also obey school crossing guards.
The release said students walking to school should walk with an adult, a responsible older sibling or in a group. Walk on the sidewalk, if there is one, or walk facing traffic. Cross in crosswalks or with the assistance of a crossing guard. Students should also wear bright colors and reflective gear, especially as days get shorter.
Bicycle riders should wear a properly fitted helmet and follow all rules of the road. They should communicate with drivers by using hand signals to indicate turns and stops.
