Crews with the Douglas Forest Protective Association dealt with 2 fires over the Labor Day weekend.
Kyle Reed said firefighters from their agency and from the North Douglas County Fire & EMS responded to a reported grass fire Saturday morning at approximately 10:40 a.m. It was located 1 mile west of Drain, near the intersection of Hayhurst Road and Highway 38. A fast response from North Douglas crews stopped the Hayhurst Road Fire at 1/100th of an acre of grass. Fire investigators determined that the fire was caused by a faulty catalytic converter from a passing vehicle.
Crews from DFPA, Winston-Dillard Fire Department, Douglas County Fire District No.2 and Tenmile Rural Fire Department responded to a report of an outbuilding on fire Sunday evening about 9 miles southwest of Winston, near the Thompson Creek and Rice Creek divide. Firefighters arrived on scene of the Thompson Creek Fire around 11:00 p.m. and found that the fire had spread to surrounding vegetation and to an adjacent building. The fire burned about 1/10th of an acre of grass and brush. 2 outbuildings were also destroyed by the fire. A preliminary investigation indicated the cause of the Thompson Creek Fire may have been related to the use of a generator.
To date, DFPA has responded to and suppressed 74 fires this season, which have burned a total of 13,426 acres. The largest was the Milepost 97 Fire which burned a total of 13,119 acres.
