Families preparing their students for the new school year in the Winston-Dillard School District will no longer have to worry about ensuring children have access to nutritious meals each day.
When school starts next Monday, all students in the district will have receive free breakfasts and lunches through the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Program’s Community Eligibility Provision. Winston-Dillard and its food services provider, Sodexo, applied for the provision and qualified for 5 years of support, according to a district release.
Superintendent Kevin Miller said that “providing our students with regular healthy meals is crucial to ensuring they are prepared to learn and do their best in the classroom each day”. He said the program will help the district to better support its families and students.
The release said students will not need to complete a free/reduced lunch application. The district will also continue its “all you can eat” salad bar at all schools, which consists of fresh fruits and vegetables.
In addition, the district provides the Child and Adult Care Food Program, which offers a free meal to all students participating in after-school activities at both Douglas High School and Winston Middle School.
Families with questions about the program, can call the Winston-Dillard School District at 679-3000, extension 3406.
