On Friday officers with the Roseburg Police Department will be conducting pedestrian safety events around crosswalk areas in the City of Roseburg to enforce laws regarding pedestrian safety.
Sergeant Jeff Eichenbusch said the goal of the event is to reduce pedestrian injuries and fatalities, to remind drivers to be cautious when approaching crosswalks, and to yield to pedestrians that are using those crossing areas. Eichenbusch said according to statistics from the Oregon Department of Transportation, pedestrians accounted for an average of 14% of traffic fatalities in the state between 2008 and 2010. During those years, an average of 51 pedestrians were killed and 660 were injured in motor vehicle crashes.
Funds for the pedestrian safety events are provided by the Oregon Department of Transportation.
