Summer drivers are being reminded that wildfires are burning near roads this time of year.
Information from the Oregon Department of Transportation said August is about to begin and wildfires are already burning along Interstate Five in southern Oregon and on other roads throughout the state as well.
Darrin Neavoll, ODOT District 7 district manager said motorists may find reduced visibility due to the smoke and could be delayed by the active fires. Neavoll said drivers should have their headlights on and be watching for fire fighters and equipment, and not taking pictures.
ODOT’s safe driving advice for the summer include:
*If there is smoke, turn headlights on and slow down
*Drivers that cannot see, should pull safety to the side of the road
*Those pulling a trailer should make sure nothing is dragging that can spark and overheat.
*Vehicles should be kept well-maintained so they don’t overheat or get a flat tire.
*Drivers shouldn’t throw things out of their vehicles, including lit cigarettes
*Motorists should carry an emergency kit with extra water, food and medications.
*Drivers should know their route and possible detours
Neavoll said motorists should go to www.tripcheck.com to check on road restrictions or closures.
