MILEPOST 97 FIRE NOW 10 PERCENT CONTAINED

The Milepost 97 Fire is now 10 percent contained.
The latest update from the Oregon Department of Forestry said the fire remains at 11,000 acres as it burns south of Canyonville. Its burning in a fire scar from 1987 that is filled with hazardous snags and overgrown brush. It continues to move primarily in a southerly path, paralleling Interstate Five. Firefighters and aircraft are focusing much of the suppression effort on the south portion of the fire to prevent further spread towards communities.

An additional fire division has been established on the east side of I-5 to anticipate any additional spotting across the freeway. A weekend spot fire grew to 20 acres before crews and aircraft could snuff it out.
Fire officials held a community meeting at Glendale High School Sunday night to provide information to residents in the area. A large crowd packed the school’s gym.

At last report, approximately 930 firefighters are dealing with the Milepost 97 Fire.
