Crews from the Douglas Forest Protective Association, Tenmile Rural Fire Department and the Winston-Dillard Fire Department responded to a natural cover fire Thursday evening, about 10 miles southwest of Winston, near Ben Irving Reservoir.
Kyle Reed of DFPA said firefighters arrived on the scene around 6:00 p.m. and found 2 fires in the area, both burning in grass, brush and young trees. Two helicopters were diverted from the Milepost 97 Fire to assist with the initial attack on the Berry Creek Fires.
The Berry Creek Fire #1 burned about ½ acre while the Berry Creek Fire #2 burned 1.5 acres. Reed said firefighters remained on the scene until 11:30 p.m. mopping up hot spots and securing control lines.
A preliminary investigation indicated that the cause of the Berry Creek Fires may be vehicle related.
