The FISH Food Pantry will have its summer community food drive on Saturday July 27th.
Volunteers will be collecting food at Sherm’s Thunderbird, Fred Meyer, Safeway, and Albertsons from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. In addition, Grocery Outlet’s “Independence from Hunger” food drive continues through the end of this month. That store is collecting food for both the FISH Food Pantry and for the Dillard Winston Food Pantry.
A release from FISH said a variety of donated food items are needed to enhance the options of those using the pantry. At this time, the pantry is in particular need of baby food, boxed cereal, canned vegetables and canned tuna and meat. Donations of canned fruit, flour and baking mix, peanut butter, condiments and toiletries are also needed. Cash donations to help The Fish of Roseburg will also be accepted.
The release said requests for emergency food assistance from low-income families in Douglas County remain high. FISH provides emergency food boxes to over 900 households per month, which adds up to nearly 3,200 people. About 30% of those getting food assistance are children. The typical household will visit the pantry 3 or 4 times during the year.
