Crews from Douglas County Fire District No. 2 responded to a railroad tie fire Wednesday night in Green.
Battalion Chief Mark Hernandez said at around 11:30 p.m. firefighters were sent to the fire between the 1400 block of Green Siding Road and the 4300 block of Old Highway 99 South. Hernandez said dispatch had received multiple reports saying the fire was 50 feet in the air.

The first arriving crew reported a fire that was approximately a 30-foot by 30-foot pile of railroad ties with flames getting into the power lines above. They requested more resources.

Hernandez said firefighters were able to contain and knock down the fire but remained on the scene for several hours, cooling off hot spots within the pile. Several communications lines were damaged by the fire which impacted landline phones and Verizon Wireless customers in that area. Phone service was restored by mid-morning Thursday.
The cause of the fire is not yet known.
