Roseburg Police jailed a man for unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, and other charges on Thursday.

An RPD report said at 8:50 a.m. officers were contacted regarding an unknown male who allegedly took the keys from inside an elderly female’s home and stole her sedan. Officers saw the vehicle at approximately 8:50 a.m. and initiated a traffic stop in the 400 block of Northeast Winchester Street. The driver, 49-year-old Tracy Whittington claimed he had permission from the registered owner to use the vehicle but could not tell officers the name of the owner.

The owner denied that Whittington had permission. The man was also charged with first-degree burglary, a felony count of driving while suspended and for a parole violation. He was detained without bail.
