An airplane hangar and twelve classic cars were destroyed in a fire Monday night at Felts Field in Charter Oaks, just west of Roseburg.
Douglas County Fire District No. 2 Battalion Chief Mark Hernandez said the fire was reported just before 7:45 p.m. Hernandez said multiple callers said there was a large fire in the area that was spreading fast, and that several explosions were heard.
Crews arrived on the scene to find one airplane hangar fully involved, with the fire quickly spreading to the nearby field. Hernandez said firefighters stopped the forward progress of the brush fire and contained it to approximately a half acre. The main fire was contained to the one hangar with the cars destroyed. An adjacent hangar received some damage to the exterior. Fire crews spent time overhauling and knocking down hot spots. No other structures were damaged or threatened.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
DCFD No. 2 responded with 5 fire engines, 3 water tenders and 1 command vehicle. Fire departments in Glide and Sutherlin assisted with water tenders. The Douglas Forest Protective Association responded with 2 brush units.
