A woman on an electric scooter wrecked while trying to avoid an SUV in Winston on Tuesday afternoon.

Information from Winston Police said the accident happened just after 4:20 p.m. in the 500 block of Northwest Main Street. Sergeant Mike Miller said the 30-year female scooter rider was heading south on Main Street near Northeast Baker Street. The 61-year old female motorist was getting ready to leave the parking lot of a business and was waiting for traffic to clear.

Miller said the driver thought it was safe to proceed and pulled out, never seeing the woman on the scooter. The scooter rider didn’t want to strike the vehicle so tried to stop, but fell over. Miller said the vehicles never came in contact with each other. The scooter rider sustained minor scrapes and bruising.

Crews with the Winston-Dillard Fire Department checked on the condition of the rider, who was able to walk off after being medically cleared. The motorist was cited for a minor traffic violation.
