A Sutherlin area transient was jailed after allegedly swinging a hatchet on Tuesday night.

Captain Kurt Sorenson of the Sutherlin Police said that 27-year old Rusty McGill is well known to police and to many citizens. McGill had previously been trespassed from the Dollar Tree in the 1,000 block of West Central.

At about 6:30 p.m. Sorenson said the man returned to the store and was again asked to leave. The man allegedly went outside and retrieved the small hatchet. Employees held the door closed so the suspect could not reenter. Sorenson said the man stood outside the door with the weapon which placed customers and employees in fear.

McGill was charged with unlawful use of a weapon, and second degree counts of disorderly conduct and criminal trespass. Bail was set at $60,000.
