The winners list is out as the Umpqua Valley Winegrowers Association had its 49th annual Greatest of the Grape event Saturday night at the Douglas County Fairgrounds.
Organizers told News Radio 1240 KQEN that nearly 500 people attended Oregon’s longest running celebration of wine.
Terry Brandborg, UVWA Board President said this is the first year that all the wine was presented by wineries in the Umpqua Valley. 28 wineries poured their wine paired with 14 restaurants and caterers.
Professional judges rated the wine on Friday. The winners included:
*A Platinum medal went to the 2015 Delfino Vineyards Forza Tempranillo.
*Gold medals went to the 2017 Girardet Vineyards Take Flight White and the 2015 Spangler Vineyards Carmenere.
*Silver medals were awarded to the 2014 Paul O’Brien Winery Tempranillo and the 2016 The Cellars at SOWI Sauvignon Blanc
*Bronze Medals went to the 2015 Bradley Vineyards Pinot Noir and the 2015 Cooper Ridge Vineyards Merlot.
Professional food judges picked True Kitchen and Bar as having the best food followed by The Parrott House. The best restaurant/winery presentation was won by Condon’s Culinary Creations with Steamboat Inn finishing second.
Those attending voted on the People’s Choice Awards:
*Greatest of the Grape Co-Champions: The 2017 Becker Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon and the 2015 Cooper Ridge Vineyard Merlot.
*Favorite Red: The 2015 Delfino Vineyards Forza Tempranillo won with the 2017 Hillcrest Vineyards Les Combettes Pinot Noir as the runner-up.
*Favorite White: The 2018 Abacela Vineyards Albarino with the 2017 Girardet Vineyards Take Flight White as the runner up.
*Favorite Food and Wine Pairing: 2017 Becker Vineyards Cabernet Savignon and Firehouse Fudge Company with the simple, creamy milk chocolate fudge. Runner-up was the 2018 Abacela Vineyards Albarino and River Rush Catering with the grilled peach gelato in a shortbread spoon.
*Favorite Food: Steamboat Inn with the smoked bacon conserva in gourgeres. Runner-up was True Kitchen and Bar with Rosemary toast, corned beef short rib, fire roasted tomato jam, black pepper crème fraiche, maple glazed bacon.
