A man who died in a motor vehicle crash has been positively identified as someone recently reported as missing.
Sergeant Brad O’Dell of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said the county Medical Examiner has notified the family of Nicholas Blum that the deceased man found Sunday in a car registered to Blum was indeed the missing 28-year old Oakland man.
The car was spotted on its top in the Umpqua River, just off Tyee Road, between Sutherlin and Elkton Sunday morning. A fisherman made the discovery at about 9:45 a.m. Marine Deputies secured the vehicle which was later pulled out of the river with the help of Roseburg Towing.
Sutherlin Police reported Blum missing on December 26th. He had last been seen on December 23rd when he left his job at McDonalds in Sutherlin after telling co-workers that he was going to Coos Bay to see a friend.
O’Dell said the exact date of Blum’s death is unknown, however evidence indicates that the crash occurred around the time he was reported as missing.
