The 2018 Shop with a Cop event is happening on Saturday.
Andrea Zielinski of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said uniformed officers and support staff from local law enforcement agencies will be volunteering their time at the Roseburg Walmart store to help foster children in Douglas County.
Agencies participating include DCSO, the Oregon State Police, and police departments in Roseburg, Sutherlin, Winston and Myrtle Creek, along with the Douglas County Parole and Probation Department. Shop with a Cop will be held at the Roseburg Walmart from 8:15 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
Zielinski said thirty-one children have been selected and will be paired up with a police officer and given money to buy Christmas gifts for their families. The officers help the children pick out the gifts and then help to wrap them. Before leaving, each child is given their own gift and a stocking filled with goodies from Santa.
Zielinski said the purpose of the event is to make the holiday season brighter for these children and to give them an opportunity to interact with law enforcement in a positive setting.
Shop with a Cop is funded through donations. Christmas for Kids of Douglas County gave $2,100 to help make the event possible.
