The Roseburg School District has a new interim superintendent through the end of June.
Wednesday night the board approved a contract with Lee Paterson. Paterson served as superintendent from 2002 to 2008. His career with the district began in 1976.
Current Interim Superintendent Robert Freeman will return to his role as Director of Human Resources. Freeman was given the lead role after former Superintendent Gerry Washburn was put on administrative leave in August. A separation agreement was later reached with Washburn.
The board made the decision to hire Paterson in a short public segment after an Executive Session that lasted just under fifteen minutes, and followed the main board meeting. The move was made on a 6-1 vote with Reverend Howard Johnson casting the lone vote against the decision.
Paterson will begin work on October 29th and will be paid just under $107,000 for taking the position for eight months. As a current retiree he is not eligible for additional benefits under the Public Employees Retirement System so will get an additional amount of just over $12,800 in lieu of those benefits. Paterson will also receive a health care stipend of just over $10,700 in lieu of health care benefits. The District will also pay $7,500 to be applied to a tax-sheltered annuity.
The Roseburg school board will be searching for a permanent superintendent to serve the district once Paterson’s contract ends.
