Tuesday is Election Day in Oregon. Its’ the final day that voters can turn their ballots in for the May Primary Election.
Oregonians are voting for candidates for President, U.S. Senator, and Congress. Statewide races include the offices of Secretary of State, State Treasurer and Attorney General. Seats for State Senators and State Representatives are being voted on as well. Judicial seats both on the statewide and local level are also being selected.
Locally one seat on the Douglas County Board of Commissioners is being voted on. Commissioner Susan Morgan, who originally challenged the county term limits rule, withdrew from the race even after legal opinions raised questions about the constitutionality of that county rule. Nine other people filed for her seat but Mark Garcia, Dave Leonard, Dale Bryson and Nancy Morgan Lee changed their minds about running. Leonard, Bryson and Morgan Lee remain on the ballot as their exit from the race came after the deadline for formal withdrawal. Voters will choose between Gary Leif, J.D. Parks, Dennis Rogers, Victoria Hawks and R. L. Roberts. If one of the candidates does not receive over fifty percent of the vote, the top two vote getters will face off in November.
Five people are competing to replace Judge Randy Garrison on the Douglas County Circuit Court. Anthony Griffin, Kathleen Johnson, Charles Lee, Steve Hoddle and Dan McKinney are the candidates. Garrison is retiring.
Races for the offices of Douglas County Clerk, Sheriff, and Treasurer have only one candidate running unopposed. The same goes for the seat of Drain Justice of the Peace.
Voters in the South Umpqua and Yoncalla school districts have bond measures to decide on. Both districts are eligible for a partial state match on their bond measures.
The Sutherlin Valley Recreation District is asking people inside their boundaries for a permanent tax rate to help them pay for district operations.
Voters in the City of Reedsport will decide whether to have a three cent a gallon city gas tax between May and October.
