Coos County authorities are investigating what appears to be a homicide.
District Attorney R. Paul Frasier says Saturday night just after 6:00 p.m., 911 operators received a report that a deceased person had been found inside a van sitting in the parking lot adjacent to the South Jetty at Bastendorf Beach.
Frasier says deputies responded to the scene and found the body of 50 year old Byron Sherritt. The man had no established residence and had been living out of his van. Frasier believes the man had been working at Wal-Mart.
Upon examining the body, it was determined that the death was suspicious. The Coos County Major Crimes Team was activated. DA Frasier says he will wait until an autopsy is performed before he will discuss the injuries the victim has suffered.
Part of the investigation will be to determine when the victim and his van arrived in the parking lot near the South Jetty of Bastendorf Beach. Anyone with information about the case, especially anyone who can help authorities determine the whereabouts of Byron Sherritt in the past week, is asked to contact the Coos County Sheriff’s Office.
