A Roseburg man has been named OregonÕs Person of the Year for 2015.
Chris Mintz, credited with charging the shooter at Umpqua Community College on October first, was given the honor by those participating in an online poll for the Oregonian newspaper and www.oregonlive.com.Ê The 30 year old U.S. Army veteran was shot five times at close range.
Mintz captured 29.5% of the more than 6,000 votes in the survey. Coming in second was another Roseburg resident, Alek Skarlatos. A member of the local Charlie Company unit of the Oregon National Guard, Skarlatos was one of the men who helped stop a terrorist attack on a train that was bound for Paris, France last summer. Skarlatos garnered nearly 24% of the vote in the survey.
Mintz is still recovering from his injuries and has not returned to school or to work at the YMCA.Ê His actions were the subject of thousands of news stories following the shooting. A GoFundMe campaign started by a relative went viral and has raised over $818,000 to help Mintz with his recovery and future plans.
