A new report out from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs says the Roseburg VA has the highest rate of opioid prescriptions of any VA facility in the United States.
That report was released on Thursday. The report does state that the local facility has reduced its opioid prescription rate by almost 30% in the past five years.
Nearly all VA facilities have reduced their rates of prescribing opioids since 2012, according to the report. That year the Roseburg VA’s rate was 28%.
The VA’s Opioid Safety Initiative is designed to “promote safe prescribing practices and to address the broader opioid epidemic in the United States”, according to the report.
Shanon Goodwin, Roseburg VA Health Care System Public Affairs Officer released a statement Friday in response to that data. He says their providers have focused on the “safe use of opioids while slowly and steadily decreasing prescription rates”. Goodwin says providers “utilize other therapies, including physical therapy and complementary and integrative health alternatives such as yoga, cognitive-behavioral therapy, chiropractic care and Battlefield Acupuncture which is one of the larger programs we developed and are having significant anecdotal benefits”.
