One man appeared to have few injuries but was shaken up, after his vehicle left Interstate Five on Tuesday afternoon.
Just before 4:30 p.m. reports came in that a vehicle had gone into the South Umpqua River near the on-ramp leading back to the freeway from McLain Avenue. That’s the exit at the Douglas County Landfill.
Emergency crews from Douglas County Fire District No. 2 and deputies from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene. It appears that the northbound vehicle left the freeway for unknown reasons, crossed the on ramp, went through a fence, across the bike path and then struck a tree before careening down a steep embankment and stopping on the edge of the river.
After being helped from his vehicle and up the steep slope, the driver walked to a waiting ambulance to be checked out.
Further details on the man’s condition and what may have led to the accident will be released as they become available from authorities.
