A Veneta man died in a three vehicle wreck west of Elkton on Sunday afternoon.
A report from Oregon State Police says that at about 4:20 p.m. a westbound vehicle operated by an 83 year old Coos Bay man swerved into the oncoming lane of traffic when the driver apparently was blinded by the sun. The driver of an eastbound pickup, a 70 year old man from Junction City, tried to avoid the other vehicle but both rigs collided nearly head on.
The west bound vehicle finally stopped facing eastbound on the eastbound shoulder. The pickup ended up facing eastbound in the westbound lane. A third vehicle, another pickup, driven by a 77 year old man from Cottage Grove, struck the other pickup and continued off the westbound shoulder where it eventually stopped.
A passenger in the second vehicle, 29 year old Jerry Palmer of Veneta, was extricated from that vehicle and succumbed to his injuries. The drivers of the first two vehicles were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, while the driver of the third vehicle was uninjured and declined medical treatment.
All vehicles had to be towed due to the damage. An investigation into the wreck is ongoing. Highway 38 was closed for about 90 minutes during the investigation.
Oregon State Police was assisted by several other agencies.
