An 18 year old man is in jail after running from police.
Chief Scott Gugel of the Winston Police says that Thursday night at about 7:45 p.m. an officer attempted to stop a sedan on Carter Street. Gugel says the vehicle failed to yield and led the officer on a short pursuit. The driver and the passenger exited the vehicle while it was still moving at the top of a hill. While they tried to run away, the vehicle crashed into a fence.
Deputies from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and troopers from Oregon State Police arrived and located the passenger a short time later hiding behind the Safari Inn. The driver, who was later identified as Gavin Simmons, turned himself in the next day and was detained.
Chief Gugel says charges against Simmons include attempting to elude police both in a vehicle and on foot, reckless driving, recklessly endangering another person, second degree counts of criminal mischief and disorderly conduct, interfering with a peace officer and failing to perform the duties of a driver when property is damaged. After arraignment on Friday, Gavin Simmons is being held on $10,000 bail. The passenger was apparently not charged.
