Friday students at Fremont Middle School in Roseburg are learning about the Civil War in a unique way.
The Social Studies Department at the school brought in the Northwest Civil War Council. That’s a non-profit living history organization of people from around Oregon that teach about life in America in the 1860s.
Students go to several stations where they can learn about artillery, infantry, cavalry, medical and civilian life during the time period. The instructors are dressed in clothing from the time period and brought items like cannons, guns, knives, and medical supplies.
For the middle school students, the cannons seemed to get the most attention.
The Northwest Civil War Council is doing similar Reenactment Events several times around Oregon in the next few months. The organization’s website is www.nwcwc.net.
