March 20, 2017 2:00 p.m.

Two people are in the Douglas County Jail on stolen vehicle and other charges.

Sergeant Brad O’Dell of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office says that Saturday afternoon at about 2:00 p.m. a deputy saw an Acura previously reported as stolen allegedly being driven by 34 year old Terry Thomas of Roseburg. O’Dell says the deputy tried to stop the vehicle but the driver took off. The car eventually crashed on Gazely Road near Lou Gray Drive in Canyonville.

The report says that the driver and his passenger, 24 year old Whitney Atterbury, exited the car and took off running. Atterbury was captured after a brief foot chase.  However Thomas jumped into the South Umpqua River and began to float downstream.  After about 45 minutes, the man, who was by then unconscious, was rescued from the water by deputies. He was treated at Mercy Medical Center before being taken to jail.

Terry Thomas is charged with possession of a stolen vehicle, fail to perform the duties of a driver, obstructing governmental administration, interfering with a police officer, resisting arrest, attempting to elude on foot and in a vehicle, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, and for a parole violation.

Whitney Atterbury is being held on charges that include possession of a stolen vehicle, unlawful possession of methamphetamine, obstructing governmental administration, interfering with a police officer, resisting arrest, second degree escape, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and for a parole violation.

Both people are being held without bail.
