Crews with the Oregon Department of Transportation are starting work on a cable median barrier project Monday.
Dan Latham of ODOT says that cable median is used along much of Interstate Five to improve safety by reducing the potential for crossover crashes and head-on collisions. Latham says the project will close several gaps in the system by installing cable barrier in around fifteen locations between Elkhead Road in northern Douglas County and the California border.
Construction is starting on the north end of the project area and will gradually move south. That work will require intermittent closures of the left shoulder and the left lane of the freeway. Motorists should watch for construction vehicles entering and leaving the travel lanes. Dan Latham says that work will take place both day and night.
The $7.4 million project is slated to be finished by January of next year.
