A fatal accident near Gardiner has claimed the life of a Coquille woman.
Captain Bill Fugate of Oregon State Police says a station wagon driven by a 66 year old Coquille man was headed northbound on U.S. Highway 101 north of Gardiner at about 11:15 a.m. on Thursday. A preliminary investigation revealed that the man’s vehicle crossed the northbound fog line, clipped the guardrail impact panel and then left the roadway. The station wagon crashed into an embankment on the shoulder before it finally stopped.
Both the driver and his female passenger was extricated by fire and medically personnel and were taken to Lower Umpqua Hospital in Reedsport. 83 year old Betty Phillips was pronounced deceased at the hospital. The driver was taken to Sacred Heart Medical Center at Riverbend in Springfield. His condition is not yet available..
